What is Play-Based Learning?
Play-based learning is an educational approach that uses play as a medium to promote learning in children. Through play, children develop social and cognitive skills, mature emotionally, and build the self-confidence required to engage with new experiences and environments. This method respects children’s innate curiosity, using their natural interests to introduce and reinforce key educational concepts.
Play in Action at Hamelin-Laie
In our Early Years Program, play-based learning is seamlessly integrated into the daily curriculum. Our classrooms are thoughtfully designed with a variety of materials and resources that encourage exploration and discovery. From blocks and puzzles to art supplies and dramatic play areas, children have countless opportunities to learn through play.
Our experienced educators guide and scaffold learning within play activities, ensuring that children are not just having fun but also acquiring essential skills. For instance, math concepts like counting and spatial awareness can be explored through block play, while science concepts such as volume and buoyancy come to life during water play. The possibilities for hands-on, engaging learning are endless.
The Benefits of Play-Based Learning
The advantages of play-based learning extend beyond the classroom. This approach makes learning enjoyable while also supporting the holistic development of our young learners:
Social Skills: Collaborative play fosters communication, teamwork, and empathy.
Cognitive Development: Problem-solving and critical thinking are naturally encouraged through exploration and experimentation.
Emotional Growth: Play allows children to express themselves, manage emotions, and build resilience.
Physical Development: Activities involving movement and fine motor skills enhance coordination and strength.
By making learning an enjoyable and dynamic process, we prepare our students for the journey ahead, equipping them with skills and attitudes that will benefit them throughout their lives.
A Multilingual and Culturally Diverse Environment
Based on the Spanish National Curriculum, our bespoke international Early Years curriculum focuses on nurturing each child’s natural curiosity and love for discovery. As an international nursery school in Barcelona, our students primarily learn in English but are also introduced to Spanish and Catalan. This multilingual approach helps children develop linguistic abilities and cultural awareness from an early age.
Our program includes a variety of stimulating activities that encourage exploration, creativity, and physical movement. These experiences are enriched by our vibrant international community, which represents over 45 nationalities, fostering an open-minded worldview in our young learners.
